Installation method of power surge protector

August 23,2023

The surge protector is installed on a 35MM standard rail

For fixed SPDs, the following steps should be followed for routine installation:

1) Determine the discharge current path

2) Mark the wires, which cause additional voltage drops at the device terminals.

3) To avoid unnecessary induction loops, the PE conductor of each device should be marked,

4) Establish an equipotential connection between the equipment and the SPD .

5) To carry out energy coordination of multi-level SPD

In order to limit the inductive coupling between the installed protected part and the unprotected part of the equipment, certain measurements are required. The mutual inductance can be reduced through the separation of the induction source and the sacrificial circuit, the selection of the loop angle and the limitation of the closed loop area,

When a current-carrying conductor is part of a closed loop, the loop and induced voltage are reduced due to the proximity of the conductor to the circuit.

Generally speaking, it is better to separate the protected conductor from the unprotected conductor, and it should be separated from the ground wire. At the same time, in order to avoid transient quadrature coupling between power cables and communication cables, necessary measurements should be made. Data cable: requires greater than 2.5mm²; when the length exceeds 0.5 meters, requires greater than 4mm². YD/T5098-1998.

Power line: when the cross-sectional area of the phase wire is S≤16mm², use S for the ground wire; when the cross-sectional area of the phase wire is 16mm2≤S≤35mm², use 16mm² for the ground wire; when the cross-sectional area of the phase wire is S≥35mm², the ground wire requires S/2; GB Section 2.2.9 of 50057
